We were invited to tour soon to open OZONA Blue. The client had done an outstanding job of designing this waterfront restaurant. It was contemporary, yet incorporated natural materials, design elements and details that already communicated its salty character. They had become familiar with Hal's background and work and asked this "Native Son" to propose art that would further enhance the entire dining experience for their customers and also express their awareness and appreciation of the natural amenities that make this marina setting, on the Gulf of Mexico, so special.
The main art feature was to be sculpture including a water element. Hal was also asked to include art for selected walls, doors, and a feature on the facade of the covered wetslips to the West. The client shared his regard for Type 316 Stainless Steel in this marine environment – and knew that Hal had the creativity, experience and fabrication team to carry out the desired effect
I wanted to infuse the Ozona Blue experience with the beauty and mystique of the surrounding and adjacent natural environment – and to stir up thoughts and talk of old and new legends.
I selected shorebirds and sunsets as a theme – subjects to which all locals and visitors, as well as boaters and fishermen, can relate.
The tensile strength and reflective qualities of Type 316 Stainless Steel makes it the perfect medium to express the graceful shorebird forms and reflect the everchanging Florida sky – especially at sunset.
Colorful canvases and neon further carry out the theme.
Hal Stowers Fall 2006
Hal and I envisioned visiting Ozona Blue again soon for Sunsets and dinners under the stars!
"Sun Sea Odyssey"
Expresses the beauty of our pristine barrier islands with their sugar white sand,
dunes and sea oats – a Stowers' classic subject. It also expresses "Sky Mountains" –
Hal's term for Florida's everchanging cloud formations – and a respect for the power
of Nature experienced while living offshore on board our floating studio
a 36' trawler, MANGROVE MOMMA IV, in the mid 80's.
"Great White"
Inspired by the Great White Egret in its marsh and mangrove wetlands
– the view is from our nearby studio, Point Sun Moon and Sea, overlooking what
we named "Happy Bayou."
The GREEN FLASH
Several times while walking on Honeymoon Island,
B.J. and I have been fortunate to have experienced the
"Green Flash" on the horizon for just a split moment
following the setting sun.
And once, after the "Green Flash" we saw a startling
"Neon Blue Flash"!
No one else we knew had ever seen it or heard of it.
Finally, much later on the internet, we found references to this very rare
phenomenon that occurs when the atmosphere is clear.
OZONA Blue on the gulf, facing West, seems the
perfect place to share and watch for this unique event in Nature!
And so, I created the Neon and Stainless Steel work entitled
"The Green Flash at OZONA Blue"

"Great Guana Beach, Abacos"
A favorite island retreat and meeting place for the adventurous, was selected
as a focus for the Tiki Bar at OZONA Blue.
It is sure to bring about intriguing memories, talk and tales about cruising in surrounding
Florida, Bahamian and Caribben waters!
